The body will be bent at the waist, with the left hand extended and forming the bridge. Some weight is put on the bridge hand to help steady the bridge and reduce strain on the back. The right leg should be fairly straight.
The upper section of the right arm should be parallel to the table, and the forearm is ideally at a 90 degree angle to the upper arm. Grip the cue butt loosely, so that the stroke will be perfectly vertical and not waver off to the side.
Important - keep your cue stick as level as possible. This will enable you to hit the cue ball above and below the center line, for follow and draw shots, without miscueing.
Your chin should be down low and directly over the cue stick. Sight down the stick with your preferred aiming eye, so that you have a straight line of sight from the cue ball to the object ball.
It is very important that you have a smooth, even stroke, so work on this and keep it in mind at all times when playing. Bend the right arm at the elbow and stroke using a pendulum motion. Keep the stroke on an even vertical line - any movement to the side will throw off your aim.
Before you hit the cue ball, take 3 or 4 practice strokes to make sure you are hitting the cue ball at exactly the right spot for the type of shot you are attempting. These practice strokes also give you the chance to sight back and forth between the cue ball and the object ball, so you get your aim just where you want it.
Finally, when you shoot, be sure to follow through on the stroke. Your cue tip should go right through where the cue ball was, and travel at least 4 or more inches for most shots. Follow through will make an amazing difference in your ability to make the shots, especially long shots.
A good pool shooting stance and a quality pool stroke are pool basics that will always pay off for you in the future. Spend a little time getting them right now, and it will make all the difference in your game.

I felt drawn into the novel. It takes perseverance and a bit of ploughing through, Donna Tartt takes her time, but her descriptions and characters are so well drawn you feel as if you are merely remembering a time from your own past.
And yes there are some problems with the novel, sometimes I lost track of where I was, and the central mystery remains unresolved - which is a bit annoying especially if youve grown up with a collection of Agatha Christie novels - but then, maybe real life is unresolved?
If youre looking for light, holiday reading - this is not your best choice, but if you have time to sink into Donna Tartts world - then I think you will enjoy the journey. I did.

Preachers taking antidepressants and sleeping pills...how do you lead a group of people in their spiritual life if you have to take a happy pill during the day and a sleeping pill at night just to get through your life? I mean...take the pills if you really need them, but let someone else preach.
People in all walks of life with all kinds of authority and responsibility stoned...and making decisions that effect our local, state and national communities and political procedure. How can you make an informed decision when you have to take mood altering drugs on a daily basis?
Random drug testing? Easily beaten if know how to work the system or if you have enough money or clout to grease the system.
It has given us a country (and world) paralyzed by mediocrity and voters who only vote for politicians who promise to take care of them. Huge amounts of money are taken from hard working people and given to people who gladly take it as though they are entitled to it and they donapos;t care that their country is coming to the place very soon where we can no longer afford to do it. There isnapos;t enough tax money to go around and if you tax companies and individuals to the point that it isnapos;t worth going to work anymore...they wonapos;t go work.
Personal responsibility is how you get over your need for happy pills and sleeping pills. Look at your problems head on and make the CHANGES necessary to solve the problems. If you donapos;t make the changes you need to make, learning life lessons do no good. Applying the life lessons are what makes the changes. Identifying toxic relationships is not enough. You have to end toxic relationships so that your can pursue meaningful relationships. Toxic relationships will always destroy or cause problems in meaningful relationships. Stop putting your trust in people. People will ALWAYS let you down. Never allow circumstances to dictate how you feel. You canapos;t blame circumstances for your decisions. If circumstances can steal the joy of your life, you are allowing yourself to become a victim instead of a survivor. Decide who you are, and what you do and how you feel and live it every day and when something moves you from those positions, then deal with them problems and get back on track.
That is real life.
Now I do understand that there are those who have brain chemical balance problems that need to be balanced by medication. I know that there are some who have physical brain abnormalities who need medication to live life. I also know that there are some who suffer with real insomnia and need medication for relief. I understand those things and even empathize with you.
But you donapos;t need a pill because you "feel bad" or your conscious is keeping you awake at night or if you donapos;t work hard enough to fall asleep at night. Feel bad and get over it. Go to those situations that are keeping you awake and reconcile them as best you can. If it doesnapos;t work out, you did your best and your conscious wonapos;t keep you awake. And unless you are real insomniac, exercise and no stimulants late in the evening will put you to sleep.
There...Iapos;ve done it. Iapos;ve solved the problems of the world. Now I feel better and Iapos;m going to sleep ;-)

Well.. Since Anzac day really.. And Aussies know that is April 26. We did a parent teacher thing on the 25th and came home feeling sick. We died the next day... Both of us.. Laid on the sofa and moaned occasionally lifting our heads enough to praise Mum who had Lochie.. And back to the odd moan.
It wasn't fun.
I almost got over it when the next cold came.
We all had it. Lochie and I spent our days chilling in front of our own computers in the studio.. This too shall pass, right?
We ALL HAD it... I was the only one left with it The boys have both been fine and only just started sniffles etc in the COLD COLD COLD of this week. They arent sick.. They just have a bit of a headcold.. And mostly only at night when it is cold..
Me... On the other hand.. I FINALLY drag myself to do the docs on Monday. An inability to breathe and a cough to silence a wharfie who chains smokes (does that makes sense to Americans? LOL) has left me in need of a Dr. I HATE going. They leave you in the waiting room for 45mins to catch something else and then say virus
She didn't say virus.. She said SICK.. Very sick. Pneumonia and I started my first course of antibiotics. You have to be nearly legally dead to get antibiotics here so I figured I was really sick and it wasn't my mind playing tricks on me.
Tuesday I began coughing blood and not being able to move far. No air. HIDEOUS cough and really struggling.
Wednesday was worse. I stayed in bed all morning which I think helped a little .. The boys bounced in and out but I stayed put.. In a sea of white goodness. I do love white bed linen... White PJs.... And a white macbook... I do believe it is the trifecta of happiness for a sick person
But Lochie said I sounded like a scary Darth Vader and I really couldn't breathe.
I booked a reflexology and ioncleanse. Not a big fan of any medicine let alone alternative. Part of me says take a whack of drugs and get on with it. Part of me thinks these things are worth a try and be open minded. I had done the ion cleanse thing before and felt GREAT for about 3 days afterwards.. So I thought it worth a shot.
It is weird. You go in and they get you a plastic tub. Lined in a garbage bag... You sit in a big leather recliner..fit in bucket filled with warm water. They strap a thing on your wrist.. And a box in the water... Looks like something that might aerate a fish tank. You wait 30 mins. It tingled a little yesterday... Not really sting but a sharper tingle.
The water becomes GROSS.. No easy way to say it.. YUCK it is all the toxins coming out. Yep call me crazy but bad stuff comes out your feet and into the water... The colour indicates the problem. Last time my water looked like beer.. See through and orange.. Not pretty but not so bad apparently. Yesterday it was
OWN and algae type stuff was in there.. Ugh... REALLY
The lady came back and asked if I was a smoker? Nope. Never.. And she said.. This is from lungs.... I explained.. And she said.. Oh is all better now then
and we moved on to the reflexology... Which is basically a great foot rub and made me kinda sleepy..LOL
I noticed tho.. Instead of coughing every 3 mins... I had coughed twice and not the BAD cough I had been doing. I was breathing. Normally. My headache.. From all the coughing was light too.. I sort of knew I had a headache but couldnt FEEL it. I also have ear infection.. Both ears.. But they were not hurting anymore. Felt annoying but not painful.
I left feeling lighter and better.
I woke this morning feeling energy.. Not energetic but like there was life inside me...
and at $60 you can bet i am headed back again soon
TOTALLY recommend it.. Worth a try right? I went to Foot Haven at Indooroopilly... But there are sure to be other places who offer it.
I am working again today.. Breathing normally and coughing every 30 mins or so.. I feel like I have a cold... So looking at finishing up the antibiotics and heading back to the docs monday.

It has survived over six decades of competition to remain the touchstone of American cinema, perhaps even world cinema. It holds first place on the American Film Institutes One Hundred Greatest Films of all time. It has generated multiple books about its creation, distribution, and the resulting furor. It is dissected annually by Roger Ebert at film festivals. It is a staple of college film courses. One wonders if there is any reason to add yet another review to the pile of literature surrounding Citizen Kane.
Ive decided to engage in this potential futility as a feeble attempt to counter the growing sentiment that Citizen Kane is uninteresting. While I am tempted to blame this on the younger generation, I am also reminded that the last person to call the film "boring" in my hearing was a forty-something math teacher. So many years have elapsed since the films creation, and we have been so barraged with an escalating glut of movies in recent years, that laudatory remarks for the film are increasingly relegated to film critics, film students, and industry insiders. The rest see merely a tired old monochromatic drama and find themselves stifling yawns.
I was once part of the crowd that considered Citizen Kane a dull experience. I made the mistake of viewing the film for the first time when I was barely twelve or thirteen, renting it simply because I was aware that every budding film-maker was supposed to admire it. And I was bored. I couldnt understand half of what I had just seen, nor any of what made the film great.
Then I saw it again in my early 20's, not just more informed about film production, but also more mature in my outlook on life. And suddenly the film was irresistibly gripping, in both its cinematic technique and its philosophical import. If your first impression of Citizen Kane was lackluster, or if you have yet to bother watching it, please read on for just a small dose of what makes this movie a fascinating study.
Following the classic format of world literatures greatest tragedies, Citizen Kane explores how a characters flaws lead him ever deeper into an inescapable despair. The flaw in this case is complete selfishness, catalyzed by a loveless childhood. And the character being explored is Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles).
The film opens with Kane alone in a dimly lit bedroom within an expansive estate. He lies in bed, clutching a snow globe. He utters one word: "Rosebud". And then he dies.
Why a man who rose to tremendous heights of fame and fortune in his life would die so alone, with such an enigmatic final word, is the subject of a newspapers investigation. Reporter Jerry Thompson (William Alland) interviews several people who were central to Kanes life in the hopes of discovering who or what "Rosebud" was, and as each person responds to the reporters questions, we flash back to the relevant moments in Kanes life.
Kanes history begins with his childhood at his parents boarding home in Colorado. The conversation is somewhat elusive, but from what I can gather, Kane stands to inherit a sizeable fortune from some stocks that his mother received as payment from a boarder. In an effort to keep the boys legacy out of the hands of her husband, Mrs. Kane (Agnes Moorehead) signs her son over to the care of Walter Parks Thatcher (George Coulouris), a banker. In effect, Kane is adopted by a corporation.
Kane spends his years as a minor in Thatchers care. Lacking parental guidance and nurture, he is a wild and prodigal youth. Physical adulthood fails to lead to mature character, and Kane becomes merely a grown-up version of his intemperate adolescence. He freely squanders his inheritance on whatever comes to mind, including the purchase of a newspaper, which he commandeers to print whatever he desires, including stories that may or may not be entirely true.
In line with his impetuous personality, Kane marries twice, first to Emily (Ruth Warrick), a woman who would have made a wonderful wife and mother if Kane had taken the time to notice. As his marriage begins to bore him, Kane turns to Susan (Dorothy Comingore), a pretty young thing he passes one day, and the affair leads to divorce and the second marriage. But this marriage collapses also, because although Kane dotes upon Susan to no end, paying for her operatic career and even building the marvelous Xanadu estate just for her, Susan wants real affection, something Kane does not understand or know how to give.
It is Kanes desire to receive and give love or what he thinks is love that leads to the alienation of just about everyone who would befriend him. Lifelong companions desert him, his newspaper empire falters, and his political campaign dissolves in the wake of his scandalous activities. In the end, he spends his last days alone in a palatial estate that has nothing to offer him but the echoes of his footsteps.
And so we now must answer the central question foundational to this reviews purpose: Why is this film held in such high esteem? Without re-writing all the books that have covered this question, let me put forth some brief thoughts. These will perhaps not be in the same order others would propose, but I have my reasons.
First, and perhaps the reason with the least impact, is its notoriety. Though Orson Welles never admitted it out loud, it was obvious that he was presenting a thinly disguised and highly scathing biography of newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst. It is not a scene-by-scene parallel, but the comparisons between Kane and Hearst are too numerous to be coincidence, and Hearst knew it. He did everything in his power to ruin Welles and prevent the films release, but even his vast fortune and leverage could not stop it from reaching the public.
While that history is interesting, I assign it the lowest significance because Hollywood is regularly churning out films that anger people. If Citizen Kane had had nothing else in its favor, the publicity inadvertently afforded it by Hearst would not have been enough to sustain its power up to the present day.
Second, and decidedly more amazing, is the fact that this was Orson Welles first film. Given the tremendous artistic skill that even some of the worst directors must possess to get a film finished, Citizen Kane represents an astounding achievement for someone whose previous experience had been entirely in radio and theater, and who was only in his 20's when he began production on the film.
Third, Citizen Kane represents great leaps forward in cinematic creativity. Much of this is likely because of Welles inexperience: He was not bound to the conventions of contemporary cinema because he had never been trained in them, so he did things that went thoroughly against the grain. Perhaps the most frequent defiance of convention is the films numerous long takes with deep focus. Were getting into film jargon, so let me explain.
A standard film lens focuses on one particular distance, while everything else falls out of focus to varying degrees. But a deep-focus lens, together with appropriate lighting, will keep everything on screen in focus, from the closest to the furthest objects. The films cinematographer, Gregg Toland, was a pioneer of these lens and the subtle effects they could create.
Then there are the long takes, or shots. A fairly standard pattern for any basic conversation scene is to start with a shot that lets us see where everyone is standing, and then as the scene progresses, we cut to closer shots of the individuals in turn as they speak or react. Citizen Kane ignores this and is packed with shots that do not cut for sometimes over a minute, keeping all the major characters on screen. Welles experience as a stage director no doubt gave him great training in staging these shots, guiding the actors so that they would move, speak, hold still, and look at all the right times to let us viewers know where our attention should be.
Despite Welles lack of cinematic background, he was a prodigy on the radio, and it was his experience and philosophy of excellence that guided many of his innovations. This was the man who so successfully imitated emergency news broadcasts in performing War of the Worlds that he caused real panic among listeners. In the same way, the opening news reel in Citizen Kane is crafted to mimic the style and idiosyncracies of actual news reels that would play in theaters before the feature. The film was deliberately scratched, dragged across the floor, run through sandbags, and otherwise abused so that it would look like real clips spanning the many years of Kanes life. I remember watching this movie for the first time and being confused because here was all this "authentic" news footage of a man I was certain was fictional. Im fairly sure Welles would have felt satisfaction on hearing that.
No single reason supports the films status by itself, but my fourth reason holds the most weight in my opinion: Its a powerful movie! Certainly it is old, and we have made vast improvements in film stock, sound recording, editing, and all the other technical aspects of production. But Citizen Kane rises above its archaic facets with a strong story told well.
In the same way we suffer as we watch Hamlet lose himself to his vengeful obsession, or feel horror creep over us as we realize the heinous crimes Oedipus the King has unknowingly committed, we watch with sadness as Kane blindly sinks because of his own selfish choices. He buys a newspaper because it feeds his ego, he marries Susan because it makes him feel good, he lavishes gifts upon her because he wants to feel loved. Kane is a man who never learns to shed childhood impulse; he is the classic Me, Me, Me, from beginning to end, even when he sincerely believes that he is doing things for other people. Deprived of love in his youth, he craves it desperately; but he never comes to the realization that true love is not focused inwardly at all, but outwardly.
Perhaps a few lines by Jed Leland (Joseph Cotten) summarize it best: "You dont care about anything except you. You just want to persuade people that you love em so much that they ought to love you back. Only you want love on your own terms. Its something to be played your way according to your rules." By the time Kane accepts this (if he ever really does), it is too late.
This tragedy is expertly played out by Welles and his cast, most of whom were part of his radio troupe and joined him on the silver screen for the first time. Joseph Cotten (Shadow of a Doubt) plays Welles school buddy Leland, who slowly becomes disenchanted with his friend as Kane shifts from a Socialist idealist to, well, an arrogant ass. In one scene, showgirls perform a song that Kane wrote for his own glory, and while Leland goes through the motions of clapping along, Cotten brings a look to Lelands eyes that reveal his growing doubts.
Dorothy Comingore gives one of the stronger performances in the film as Susan Alexander, the young girl Kane falls for when his marriage is in the doldrums. As almost a companion to Kanes character arc, Susan goes from young and idealistic to older, wiser, and downtrodden. Comingores cinema history is less than noteworthy, which is surprising given her full range of character delivered here. Apparently Welles saw more in her than studio executives did.
The entire cast is impeccable, with Everett Sloane and George Coulouris giving the performances that stick most in my mind. However, I find Agnes Mooreheads performance strangely wooden; and while I can only assume Welles wanted it that way, it adds a layer of surrealism to her scene that makes the bizarre event of a woman signing away her son to a banker even more unfathomable.
Im not going to delve into the technical arts of the film any more than I already have. Let it suffice to say that everything in the film, from the lighting to the editing to the music score, is a product of that fertile creativity Welles brought to Hollywood. Innovations abound, many we are not even aware of when watching.
If youve tried Citizen Kane and gave up or dismissed it, or if youve never even bothered because it was just "some old movie," let me encourage you to try it again with these ideas in mind. Check out some books on Welles journey in making the film. Or, if your reading time is slim, find the DVD edition that features Roger Eberts commentary. Within a compact two hours, Ebert brings up some interesting anecdotes about the making of the film, and points out many of the tricks and techniques that Welles and Toland invented.
And then back up, close out all other distractions, and really watch it for what it has to say about humanity, particularly the difference between love and selfishness. In my opinion, this more than anything is what gives the film its richness and longevity. As long as we remain a race of self-absorbed beings, the warnings from Kanes tragic plight will be potent and poignant.
